The theme of the day will be “Mental Health in The Student Workplace”. As the youth of our time, and with our current generation, we have been born into a world full of opportunity and connectedness. With the advent of Social Media, mobile phones, amongst other technological advancements, we may be tempted to think that life now is much better than before.
With these positive advancements, comes the negative prodding of societal pressures to outdo standards set by peers, unrealistic expectations, depression and the ironical disconnection from each other through the same devices made to connect us all. Times have changed and expectations to do better are higher than ever, especially to students. Sadly, the main sufferer of this all is the mind. With increasing rates of mental health diseases such as depression, suicide and other anti-social behavior, this is why we need to develop a culture of taking care of each other’s minds more than anything, by letting off the anxieties of daily exertions and speaking out.
We need to create avenues of openness and make safe spaces for people to be free to be themselves and not bear the world on their shoulders. This is the sole purpose of TEDxUniversityOf Nairobi.
